🛠 Step-by-Step Instructions
Step 1: Choose a starting point
Option A: Copy a template
The fastest way to start is to copy a pre-built template:
- From the top main navigation bar, select Competency.
-
Navigate to Competency Library > Competency Templates in the left-hand menu.
-
Click on a template to review the Overview information (such as Purpose, Settings, and Related Standards). Then, select Preview to review the assessment criteria and ensure it meets your needs.
-
Click Copy Template. This creates a draft in your library.
- Proceed to Step 2: Configure & Build.
Option b: Start from scratch
If you can't find a template that suits, you can build a competency from scratch:
-
Click the + Add button in the left-hand menu.
-
Select Competency, then select Start from Scratch.
- Enter the title and purpose of the assessment, then click Continue.
- Proceed to Step 2: Configure & Build.
Step 2: Configure and build
Now that you are in the builder (whether via a template or a blank canvas), work through the four tabs to define your assessment:
1. Details
Start by reviewing the Details to establish the essential background information for this assessment.
| Competency Title | The official name of the assessment (e.g., "Aseptic Technique"). |
| Estimated Time to Complete (minutes) | The approximate time it takes an assessor to evaluate all criteria. This helps allocate sufficient time for the assessment. |
| Purpose | A summary explaining why the assessment is being conducted and what it measures. |
| Resources Needed | What assessors and candidates need to arrive prepared for the assessment. |
| Relevant Job Roles | The specific job roles within your organisation that this assessment applies to. This clarifies who the assessment is intended for. |
| Related Standards | The standards that apply to your context. Linking these helps show that the assessment is purposeful and aligned to quality practice and required standards. |
| Related Learning | The content in Ausmed Learn™ related to this assessment. This connects theory with practice, ensuring that knowledge gained in training is validated by structured assessment. |
| Assessors | The specific people authorised to evaluate candidates against this competency assessment. |
2. Criteria
The criteria define exactly what the candidate is being evaluated against. To help organise criteria, assessments use sections and criteria groups:

-
Sections are broad topic areas that structure the assessment.
-
Criteria groups sit within sections and group related criteria together.
This structure helps assessors understand how criteria relate to each other and makes longer assessments easier to navigate.
Each criterion is the core unit of assessment and includes:
-
a question that defines what is being assessed
-
optional notes for assessors to support consistent judgement
-
optional checklists to capture specific evidence
-
an outcome, where the assessor records whether the criterion is Satisfactory, Not Yet Satisfactory, or Not Applicable (if included.)
To be deemed competent, candidates must be marked Satisfactory for every criterion, except where a Not Applicable outcome has been included and appropriately selected for a specific criterion.
3. References
Cite any materials used to develop the assessment criteria here, evidencing it's based on trusted sources and designed to a high standard.
4. Preview
Periodically check this tab to see how the criterion and structure appears to an Assessor.
Step 3: Review and Publish
-
Save as Draft: If you are not finished or need to consult with colleagues before finalising, click Save as Draft. This saves your progress in the library but does not make the assessment available for use.
-
Publish: Once you have built the assessment and verified the content in Preview mode, click Publish. You will be asked to link the assessment to a Practical Activity (either by creating a new one or linking to an existing one). This is required to use the assessment in a Training Plan. Publishing makes the assessment available to authorised assessors in the Ausmed Assess app [Link: Performing an assessment].
