Learn about mandatory training and when to assign it to users.

What is mandatory training?

In its simplest form, mandatory training in the health and aged care sector refers to compulsory training (online or in-person) required by an organisation to be undertaken by anyone working in that place. Mandatory training should focus on quality care and risk avoidance, aligning with:

  • Specific laws and compliance, e.g. Health Acts, Aged Care Acts, Work Health and Safety Legislation
  • National Standards relevant to the organisation, e.g. NSQHS Standards, Aged Care Quality Standards, NDIS Practice Standards
  • An organisation’s clinical governance framework
  • An organisation’s internal policies and procedures
  • Industry expectations.

When should mandatory training be assigned?

Mandatory training should be assigned to meet the needs of your organisation. Some reasons for assigning mandatory training may be in response to:

  • Changes to legislation
  • Changes to internal policies and procedures
  • New compliance requirements set by regulatory bodies
  • Audits, onsite assessments and review audits
  • Performance against relevant Standards
  • Internal adverse events, incidents and near-misses
  • The implementation of new products and equipment.

Training can be assigned once only, or regularly, where there’s a need to refresh and keep knowledge or skills up-to-date.

How to assign mandatory training through Ausmed

There are two ways to assign mandatory training to users through Ausmed's LMS: either automatically via a training plan or manually.

Compliance requirements are created as soon as mandatory training is assigned, and are requests to users to complete the training by a due date. Compliance requirements count towards your organisation's compliance, and contain information on who is required to complete the training, what they need to complete, and the timeline for this.
